Operated by FAAM
Operated onboard

Instrument type

Name Aerosol Spectrometer Probe
Acronym Aerosol Spectrometer

Principle of operation

Measured parameter Aerosol concentration and size distribution spectra
Operating principle

Passive Cavity:
Measures amount of light scattered as aerosol particles cross a laser beam. Particle size determined using Mie theory. The particles are focussed in the field of view by a sheath airstream. Collecting optics arranged such that the probe exhibits a very small lower detection limit. Cannot be used within cloud as measurements contaminated by splashing and/or break-up of cloud droplets.
Condensation Nucleus Counter
Cloud Particle Counter

Measurement(s) Aerosol

Dimension and weight

External dimension Standard PMS canister, with external parts protrude 27 cm forward of canister, but within canister diameter
Weight 10.0

Operating mode In situ

Modified from original PMS instrument by addition of DMT SPP-200 electronics package.

Operational restriction

Operational requirements

In standard PMS type canister external to the aircraft skin where flow is at free stream velocity and remote from regions of significant flow curvature
