Education&Training - SERAI Summer School

Education&Training - SERAI Summer School

The 1st EUFAR Summer School (SERAI) dealt with Boundary Layer Research with Instrumented aircraft.
It was organized by ANM (Romanian National Meteorological Administration) from July 10th to 20th 2007 in Iasi airport, Romania.
There were 45 participants, out of which 27 students, 8 lecturers and organizers, 10 persons from the SAFIRE aircraft operator crew.

During the first week of the summer school, the students attended lectures on atmospheric physics and airborne measurements. The SAFIRE team then provided information on instruments calibration and operation, flight safety and the preparation of a flight plan.
During the second week, 5 groups of 5-6 students were constituted. Each group designed its own experiment, sampling strategy and flight plans. Two-hour flights were then performed, according to the atmospheric conditions. After each flight, the participants were summarizing their experience, the difficulties they encountered during the flight and the mitigation actions they had to negotiate with the crew to fulfill their objectives.
After the flights, the data were processed by the SAFIRE team and analyzed by the students with the support of scientific experts. Each group completed a scientific report summarizing their plans, and results.
The reports are available on the EUFAR website (Search/Documents; Search criteria "SERAI"), such as the lectures and presentations given during the school.
